The Golden Calf

A Modern Day Tale of Lies and Corruption, and Our Nation’s Fall From Grace

Synthetic THC has been FDA approved since 1985 and is currently listed as a Schedule III drug. Currently over 20 U.S. Pharmaceutical firms are working on cannabis-based medicines that will mimic, reproduce, and create bio-identical cannabinoid molecules to be turned into pharmaceutical medicine.

The most ironic thing about this is that the DEA just ruled that Marijuana – the actual plant – will remain a Schedule I drug with “no medicinal value,” and is in the same category as drugs like Heroin and LSD.

This is extraordinary. The United States government is telling us that a plant has no medicinal value, yet a bio-identical synthetic version is safe. Could this be because the government wants the pharmaceutical industry to have control over the cannabis industry?

To draw a parallel, this is as if the government successfully cloned a cow, and tells us that the milk and meat of the cloned cow are safe to ingest, yet we should be afraid of the organically grown and unmodified, original cow.

The real story is this cloned cow is just another “golden calf” – a proverbial cash cow that is owned and operated by the highly influential Pharmaceutical industry, who has our government tucked inside their deep pockets.

In human history, we have made these types of mistakes before… and they are mistakes of Biblical proportions.

Falling from Grace

Was there a time when the government was “for the people?” Our society has moved so far from that basic premise, that now we casually accept the fact that our government represents the rich, the powerful, and the special interests – not the people.

The pharmaceutical industry (and other powerful industries) now have so much influence in government that they can blatantly lie, mislead, and corrupt, with zero consequences for their actions, while they promote a worsening of public health for American people in order to feed their billion dollar habit for increasing profits.

Today, natural remedies like cannabis have been outlawed, while synthetic versions are promoted on every commercial break on every television network in America.

There are many examples of this corruption, greed and abuse. There is a proven natural remedy for high cholesterol called “Red Yeast Rice,” which contains a natural form of mevinolin (also known as monocalin K), a substance that is chemically identical to the active ingredient in the drug Mevacor (also known as lovastatin). Red Yeast Rice is cultivated from Aspergillus terrestris, a naturally occurring fungus found in soil worldwide.

Upon pressure from the Pharmaceutical industry, the FDA forced Pharmanex, the makers of Red Yeast Rice, to cease production. The company filed suit against the FDA, saying that this decision was “arbitrary, capricious, and not in accordance with law.”  The district court agreed with the company and the FDA ruling was overturned. However, a politically appointed appellate court reversed the decision, sided with FDA, and stated that “permitting manufacturers to market dietary supplements with identical active ingredients to approved new drugs would undermine the new drug development process.”

Please read that last sentence again.

It is unlawful for companies to sell natural products that are proven to provide medical benefits, if pharmaceutical companies are making synthetic versions of the same substances.

How far we have fallen as a nation.

The Hypocrisy of Cannabis

On the one hand, United States federal government officials have consistently denied that marijuana has any medical benefits. On the other, the government actually holds patents for the medical use of the plant.

US Patent 6630507 titled “Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants” is assigned to The United States of America, as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The patent claims that –

“Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.”

The US government may hold this patent, but that will not stop their officials from consistently denying the benefits of medical marijuana. FDA spokespeople continually claim that “marijuana has no currently accepted or proven medical use in the United States and is not an approved medical treatment.”

According to an article in Forbes, the pharmaceutical industry will make almost $150 billion a year just on cancer medicines. Do you think the FDA, which is made up of former executives from the pharmaceutical industry, will allow a naturally occurring and readily available alternative to their high priced poisons? By the way, this is not editorializing – the definition of chemotherapy is “a group of intracellular poisons.”

Lies and Damned Lies

America has faced crises before. Today, we are facing our country’s largest crisis ever. It is not just that the government lies to us about the medical benefits of cannabis in order to protect the powerful pharmaceutical industry. It’s that we, the people of this nation, are continually lied to by the government we elected to protect us. Our government is beholden to special interests.

This is why we had a needless war in Iraq. Remember when the Bush administration told us that there were “weapons of mass destruction” that could devastate the United States? That was a damned lie. We spent over a trillion dollars on that lie, lost thousands of lives, and left a power vacuum that created a breeding ground for terrorists.

Why are these liars not in prison?

The DEA tells us that cannabis has no medicinal value, yet the government has a patent on cannabis as a medicine. Someone is not telling the truth. Perhaps the DEA has not done their proper due diligence on medical marijuana, because if they had, surely they would be aware of the government’s patent on the plant’s medicinal properties. Yet they continue this charade and force-feed the American public a steady diet of lies and deceit.

If you are religious, you may be instinctually against legalized medical marijuana, but you should look closer at the facts, as you may have been misled by our government. Cannabis and its cousin, hemp, have been a part of society for thousands of years. Thomas Jefferson farmed hemp. Henry Ford made a car with hemp.

Hemp has thousands of uses, from building materials, to clothing, to medicines. Yet as a cousin to cannabis, it is illegal to grow and difficult to obtain.

Do you know why?

Nylon is a synthetic fiber developed by DuPont in 1935, and has similar characteristics to hemp. Nylon now has significant commercial applications in fibers (apparel, flooring and rubber reinforcement), in shapes (molded parts for cars, electrical equipment, etc.), and in films (mostly for food packaging).

Under pressure and political lobbying from DuPont in the mid 1930’s, the government promptly and without any scientific merit, made cannabis (and hemp) illegal in order to hand DuPont a monopoly on this new synthetic version of a natural product.

Does that sound familiar?

The government did a great job of convincing the public that cannabis is harmful in order to protect this monopoly. They ran racist ads that suggested that your white daughter would be raped by black men if she smoked cannabis. Then they created a “War on Drugs” during the Nixon administration, and escalated during the Reagan administration, which threw hundreds of thousands of black men into prison for possessing even small amounts of cannabis. Some received life imprisonment based on draconian laws that allowed judges no discretion in sentencing. If you were a young black man in America, you would likely go to prison for a longer term if caught with a cannabis joint than if you committed murder.

As Mark Twain said, “There are lies, and there are damned lies.”

Crisis Creates Change

America has fallen from grace and the American people have been lied to repeatedly.

However, we have learned from history that we, the citizens of this nation, can create a Tipping Point that activates change.

That is what we desperately need now.

Write to your elected officials. Call their offices. Email them. Repeatedly. Let them know that you won’t stand for a government that puts the interests of big companies ahead of its people.

We need to end special interest groups, corporate lobbying, and political action committees that spend hundreds of millions to control our government. Vote for legislators that embrace this philosophy. And while you are at it, vote to legalize the medical use of a natural plant that has been proven to provide a range of benefits that the government has lied to us about, while secretly developing and patenting synthetic versions behind closed doors.

It’s time to make the government “Of the people and for the people” once again.
